Narcissists Are Hypervigilant. When you do something beneficial or favorable for the narcissist, they will still turn against you in the end. Although you are assisting them or complying with their requests, they will turn against you at the end or even in the process of you helping them. They experience an enhanced state of sensory sensitivity accompanied by an exaggerated intensity of behaviors. The purpose of this is to detect activity that might be against them.
Their hypervigilance comes from their paranoia, where they have delusions of hostility or ill-treatment. Or they might feel as though you are trying to take advantage of them, or take something away from them. They experience unjust suspicion and mistrust. They believe that you are doing something that they are unaware of. Although you are assisting them or complying with their requests, they believe that you have a hidden agenda or an ulterior motive.
They don't believe that you have a genuine interest in helping them. They believe that you are trying to control or exploit them. Everything that you're saying or doing for them is not taken seriously. They were playing a game with you and using you for their own benefit or gain, so they believe that you could be doing the same thing to them. They are fearful and believe that you are out to get them. But they will stick around and take whatever they can get from you, while being cautious to avoid any potential problems or dangers.
Anything good that you're doing for them is seen as you not being genuine. They don't take it seriously. You might be serious about what you're doing for them. You may believe that you are establishing something significant or meaningful with them. But although you may not realize it, you're just a part of the game. You don't realize that you are a part of the game, because you have a genuine intention.
You have a genuine intention to establish something significant or meaningful. But because of the narcissist's hypervigilance, they see it as though you are developing a plan of action to defeat them. Any good that you do for them does not make them view you as a loving or caring person. They see it as though you are trying to control or exploit them. The narcissist is hypervigilant because this is what they do to people.
They pretend to be establishing something significant or meaningful with you, while secretly plotting to defeat you or get something out of you. They cannot recognise when a person is being genuine, because they don't believe that people are genuine. Not only that, but they believe that everyone is trying to take advantage of them. Everyone is using them for their own benefit or gain. So in their minds, it's all about deceiving you first.
It's all about getting you, before you get them. Because of their competitive nature and their obsessive need to win, they will play the role as though they are with you while secretly plotting against you. They cannot trust anyone because they believe that everyone is the same as them. They believe that everyone is just as controlling and manipulative as they are. It's a game to them which they have to win.
Because of their hypervigilance, they end up manipulating people who were never out to get them. People who only ever had their best interest in mind. They end up self sabotaging, destroying relationships or things that were meaningful or significant, which would have only ever been good for them in the end.
I deeply agee with the post.
Hypervigilence for narcissists is deriving from the power and control for wining usually at all cost and the problems that arise from their own cognitive dissonance. It gets tough for them so they raise the stakes, to the targets disadvantage. They have to put a cap on all things to gain as much benefit as could be attained to suit their own inflated needs in the hope that there can be found more.
They somehow know this game of theirs is coming from a position of disadvantage to themselves which is reordered in their minds as a talent of skills and use this assumingly in order to form vigilance.
