This approach leaves them unable to intimidate you because they thrive on breaking the rules and doing things that are insulting and unfair just to provoke a reaction.

Narcissists will invalidate you, making it seem like your efforts are insignificant. They may not give you any recognition, even if you helped them out of a dire situation, such as homelessness or lack of food. Despite your significant contributions, they will turn around and claim that you did nothing for them or that your efforts mean nothing because of one thing you did that they didn't like.

Narcissists love to discredit and invalidate you to make you feel worthless, as though all your efforts were in vain. They want you to feel like you wasted your time and were used, because they want you to feel bad. They don't care about your feelings; they want you to feel like you're nothing, so they will say things to provoke a reaction. They want you to point out all the things you did for them and prove yourself to them, as it gives them the reaction they seek.

When they know they are wrong and ungrateful, they still want you to feed into it and get upset. They want you to feel like they don't care about everything you did for them. They understand what it's like to feel unappreciated, but they want to make you feel that way.

If you don't respond or feed into their provocations, if you don't get angry or upset, and if you tell them you don't care or just say "whatever," you deprive them of their means of attack. You take away their ability to hurt you and make you feel insignificant because you couldn't care less. It doesn't matter to you, and this destroys their attempts to hurt you.

Narcissists know that what they are saying is wrong and that it could upset someone who has invested so much time into something. They may even lie to make you feel unappreciated. You may know you're good at something and feel confident about it, but they will tell you they never liked it and were just being fake. This is meant to erase everything you did and make you think you were never significant or beneficial to their lives.

To counteract this, you need to know yourself and have confidence in your own qualities and abilities. You need to know what you're good at because their tactics are meant to mess with your mind and affect your confidence. They want to make you unsure of yourself as you move forward, causing you to become shy and question if others were lying to you too.

Celebrate who you are and what you've done because no one else will celebrate your achievements like you can. Use the gray rock method to avoid giving them the satisfaction of feeling like they are bothering or hurting you. By not reacting, you take that power away from them.

Narcissists prefer face-to-face interactions because they can see your facial expressions. Even over the phone, they can pick up on your voice, and through text, they can tell if you're angry. They are always looking for a reaction to know if they've affected you. They may have liked everything you did for them but will lie and say they didn't care to make you feel insignificant.

When you gray rock a narcissist, it takes their pleasure away. They can't enjoy your pain or bother you, and when they don't get a reaction, they will leave you alone and move on quickly.
